The Pantheon: Two Thousand Years of History

Originally built as a Roman temple, the Pantheon has stood at the heart of Rome for nearly two thousand years. Rebuilt under Emperor Hadrian and consecrated as the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres in the 7th century, it is now one of the best-preserved monuments of the ancient world.

A Masterpiece of Roman Engineering

The Pantheon was first built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in 27 BC and later rebuilt under Emperor Hadrian, creating the extraordinary monument we see today. For centuries, emperors, popes, kings and travellers have crossed its threshold, standing beneath one of the most remarkable domes ever created.

Inside, your eyes are naturally drawn upwards to the Oculus, the open circle at the centre of the dome, where daylight transforms the space throughout the day. Inside the Pantheon, sunlight and rain become part of the experience. Through the Oculus, daylight moves across the ancient walls and marble floor, changing the atmosphere throughout the day.

On 21 April, Rome’s traditional birthday, the midday sun creates a dramatic beam of light across the entrance doorway — an effect designed by the ancient Romans to celebrate the Eternal City.

When it rains, natural air currents help disperse the finest droplets, while the water that reaches the floor is carried away through the Pantheon’s ancient drainage system.

Under changing skies, the Pantheon is never quite the same twice.
